Alien Infestation

quick game I made to test:
- swarm mechanics
- enemy reproduction mechanics
- 1 bit pixel art

The swarm mechanic is very simple here, I feel it worked but that it has a lot more potential. Possibly with a variety of level designs that require you to come up with different strategies to deal with it.

I like the dynamic of launching an energy core then shooting it with your rifle, and making explosion chain reactions with this.

I liked this 1 bit with yellow highlites art style.

Game made for the GMTK Game Jam 2020. The theme was out of control, so I thought about a unruly mob of people running around and the player having to nudge them with a water hose.

Really wanted to add screams in the style of Roller Coaster Tycoon, with the screams getting louder when you get close to the crowd, but didn't manage to do any sound stuff in time.

The color of each person in the crowd is randomly generated within a few parameters. I liked this effect a lot.

I was conflicted about adding enemies to it. On one side I did't want to lose focus on the core mechanic, which is guiding people around obstacles. On the other I wanted to have a final boss, and adding enemies was a natural way to progress towards it. Ended up adding them, but I'm still unsure.

tagline: protect your planet from the giant asteroid.

context: a short game made in one week to practice lessons from the Friendly Cosmonaut's Space Rocks tutorial and Tom Francis' Game Maker tutorial.

goals: my main goal here was to finish the game. I've read somewhere (Finishing a game - Derek Yu) that finishing a game is a good skill to have, so I'm practicing it. I gave myself one week to finish it.

As the goals for the game itself, I wanted a giant asteroid that took many many hits to destroy, I wanted the sense of awe of seeing such a gargantuan object moving towards you. I wanted a striking and simple color scheme. I wanted power ups.

how it actually came out: rough around the edges. Death is too sudden, you have to close the window to restart the game properly, etc. I wanted to add a variety of power ups and an upgrade screen instead of just the increasing rate of fire, but didn't manage to do it in time.

It's kind of fun to make the rate of fire go up really high. It's cool to see a huge asteroid occupping half the screen and moving slowly towards you. I like the art in the death screen and the sound it makes.
